10. 地域における生活 (英語)

10 Daily Life

(1) Greeting Your New Neighbors

In Japan, it is customary to visit your neighbors to introduce yourself when you have moved to a new place. This is important because you can become acquainted with people that live in your area and they may also be a good source of information. Give them a general self-introduction such as your name and what you do for living.

(2) Neighborhood Association (Chonai-Kai) and Residents’ Association (Jichi-Kai)

Usually, municipalities have some form of community organizations called Chonai-Kai (neighborhood association) and jichi kai (residents’ association). These associations bring neighbors together by having them participate in neighborhood crime watch, conduct emergency drills and organize festivals. You may also receive Kairanban, which is a circulated newsboard that contains notification from local offices or the public health department, and you will be required to pass it on to your next door neighbor. The activities are funded by fees collected from the residents in the neighborhood. Foreign citizens can also join as long as they are residents. It is a good source for obtaining local information. Ask your neighbors about associations in your area.

(3) Garbage and Recycling

Collection days vary by region and categories of garbage. Each municipality has its own rules for putting out garbage. Not following the rules will cause inconvenience to your neighbors. It may also cause problems. Please make use of the Garbage Disposal Calendar (Gomi no Hi calendar) which is issued by the Koriyama Sanitation Division and available at the meeting hall in front of the Citizen’s Affairs Division (City Hall West-Building, 1F), all City Hall Branch offices and Citizens Service offices. The Sanitation Division also offers multilingual versions (English, Chinese and Korean):
